How do they select car registrations for the cars features in adverts and do those numbers actually exist?

As jeremy clarkson pointed out last night on tg, they go for things like yha 181 so they can reverse the photo for left/right-hand drive and it still looks ok, e.g 181 ahy. clever people these marketing bods.
