Plastic shopping bags (despite ficilitating shopping) are a major source of pollution and their disposal is a major headache.

Absolutely. it is hard to recycle them because usually the only way to do so is return them to the store. they are horrible for the environment. we should use recycled/recyclable paper bags or, better yet, reusable fabric bags (though it is difficult to convince everyone to keep them in their cars and reuse them).
