I cant get my guitar to connect to my ps3 when playing guitar hero 3.?

Its the second guitar i have got from the shop where i bought it. is there a knack to getting it to connect??

If is is wirre less hold th button on that thing you plug in the controller slot for about 5 secs until it stop flashing also is you guitar on and has it got batteries i it
