Swimming the english channel.?!?

As a lad, i admired my uncle - a health & fitness nut. he exercised a lot, watched his diet carefully, and did body-building, often winning local contests of strength. when i became a teen, he began long-distance swimming, and after a time decided to swim the english channel; training hard until he felt ready. one fateful day, he and his mate went to the shores to have a go; he greased up, and off he went. soon, he knew he had underestimated the difficulty of the feat, but pressed on, his confidence slipping a little with each stroke. in time, he became filled with fear and worry, and by the time he had reached mid-way, was so distraught, he felt he couldn’t go on, and so he didn’t. he turned back, and swam back to britain – to be safe and sound. his failure destroyed him, becoming a bitter recluse for the remainder of his days –dying lonely and in despair. so the question is…what do you think he should have done there that day, in the middle of the channel?
Answer
If he reached mid-way and managed to swim back, he should have carried on as it was the same distance to make it. sad story though.
