Answer
I believe that there are certain reciprocal agreements between ireland and the uk, which may be further enhanced for you living in northern ireland. for example, does your contents insurance cover you if you lose your your contents when travelling? the main reason for taking out insurance is for the medical. staying in the uk, you are covered for medical treatment under the nhs - you may be covered in ireland but do not know. outside the uk but within the eu, you are effectively only covered for emergency treatment if your life is threatened. the moment your life is no longer threatened, you will be expected to pay for medical treatment. there is no legal requirement to take out insurance. it is merely up to you to decide whether the risk of an event happening ifies the cost of buying insurance.
