Plug it into a computer ups so that it does not loose power. keep it connected to the cable tv so that it downlots the guide on a consistent basis. read the blokeual and find out how to do a blokeual recording (you start it when the show starts or it goes based on channel and time instead of the guide -- if this is possible with your recorder).
