My 5 year old jvc digital tv has developed a fault.the picture fades to a narrow horizontal line, and the the tv switches itself off.is this a major problem or can it be repaired ?

This is a common fault called "frame collapse". the frame output chip or the scan coils are faulty. if it is the chip it should be a simple repair. if it is the coils, get a new tv. hope this helps.
