If i connect my dvd recorder through hdmi will my tvs optical out give me the 5.1 signal from the dvd?
I own a toshiba 37x3030d lcd tv and a pioneer surround system that only has an optical digital input. i wanted to buy a toshiba rd-97dt recorder and hard drive but this only has a coaxial output to the surround or hdmi. if i connected the dvd recorder via hdmi would i be able to output the digital sound through the lcd tvs optical out so it will connect to my surround system?
Answer
Hi, you can avoid all of the below and buy a converter (toslink to coax, about 20 bucks)but, if you are interested, i am pretty sure your setup can work. the tv would have to convert the signal to optical (toslink). some tvs have these converters already in them. your manual will have this info. remember to set the sound format (dolby, stereo, pcm, etc.) in the "settings/menu" for all the devices to the same setting. usually dolby digital. if you can set the recorder to auto it will record whatever sound format it receives.hope this helps.mikehttp://www.bizrate.co.uk/audio_videocables_adapters/oid582589137.html
