Horse fighting the bit?
I have a 17hh tb 10 yr old gelding, we have just got him on loan, he is
ridden in an ordinary snaffle. i tacked him up for the first time a few days ago and rode him in walk a few times round. however i noticed that he was throwing his head about alot and opening his mouth as though he was fighting the bit?? he wasnt pulling me but he was messing alot with the bit, biting on it etc... i have had the bridle and bit checked and it does fit correctly.
anyone know what may cause this?
Answer
Is the bridle properly adjusted? is the bit wide for his mouth? if ething is ok, then this horse needs a flash or drop nose band to keep his mouth closed. i never ride without one, they can still chew, drink, take snacks and open their mouth but they cannot evade the bit by opening their mouth wide.if you do not know how to properly fit one, get someone who does to help you with the fit. an improperly fit drop or flash does more harm than nice.
