I have a toshiba laptop and one of the local connections shows a "1394 net adapter" as connected. is this a built in wireless adapter? can i connect wirelessly to a router using this adapter?

No, it is not a wireless adapter, you can check for wireless adapter, right-click on your "my computer" and click: properties_hardware_device manager then check for network adapters in description you have to see wireless, if there is no-wireless adapter. then buy one usb or pcmcia version. i recommend to buy a card with the same brand as your router.
