Can we flush our central heating system ourselves?

We have no hot water, and the engineer said the system needs flshing as it is full of sludge. he quoted us £300, but we wondered if this was something wee could do ourselves with minimal diy knowledge
Answer
Yes you can. simply go to your local diy store ie wickes and buy a bottle of central heating flush. pour it into your tank in the loft. you should have two tanks in your loft, a large tank for your normal tap supply and a small tank for your heating supply. make sure you put it in the small tank. at the lowest radiator you should have a drain tap. attach a hose and run it outside, and open the tap. let the whole system run for about twenty minutes, as the tank in the loft fills it will wash through the system. after 20 mins turn the feed off from the tank and allow the tank to fill. turn off the drain tap on the radiator now. also buy a central heating protector fluid at the same time as buying the flushing fluid. put the protector in the tank and then turn on the feed from the loft tank. it will now begin to refill the radiators along with the protecting fluid. you will then have to turn the heating on and go round all the radiators bleeding them in turn. hope this helps.
