Would you get a custom purpose built laptop... high end spec laptop... or go for a mac book pro?

Go with the macbook pro. it is what most music producers use.and it is $300 to $500 less than the recommended dell, with similar specs, depending on 17" or 15" screen, and you are getting a lot more screen real estate.and, dude, you are getting a mac!hope this helps.
