When booking flights is it best to book early or leave it nearest to the date you wish to travel.?
My thinking being leaving it late the airline will want to fill empty seats.

If you know exactly where you are going and on what day/time it is usually cheaper to book well in advance when most airlines sell of the first few blocks of seats .
if you leave it late you might not be able to get exactly what you want and by that time they are in a stronger position to sell you at full price
but as you say if you
turn up on standby there are sometimes some bargains to be had , but it can be risky ,
coming back when you need to meet a deadline
