I am a british citizen living and working in dubai. my passport expires on the beginning of july and i have a vacation bokoed to go back to 2 weeks after that. it is very expensive to renew here in dubai and someone did say that i can travel with an expired passport providing it is to my home country. can anyone confirm this?

No, i do not believe you can. you will need to renew your passport before you leave, or they may not allow you to fly out of dubai.
