I have ordered something and the company are making a mockery of me, no refund and its over a week. could i raise the issue with hsbc and get a refund that way much like a credit card?

No. there are different laws governing consumer protection regarding credit cards and debit cards. credit cards offer more protection for consumers and also allow for a longer time period in which the consumer can recover those lost funds.
