Direct debit- is a company required to tell you when it is to start?

Im arguing with my credit card issuers as i set up a direct debit 2 pay them but they didnt tell me when it was going 2 start leading me 2 end up with a £40 bank charge for going overdrawn when they k they first payment. are they required to tell me when it will start (obviously i was expecting to get a letter telling me) or is it just my tough luck? the thing that reallt annoyed me was that i had already paid over the phone for the month that they k the payment so i wasnt expecting them to take one for that month thanks for your help guys
Answer
No they are meant to tell you when they will start taking payments , most companies will inform you how much will be taken about 2 weeks before the direct debit is going to be taken, well my credit card company lets me know and i thought most did.
